Water, silicone, or oil? The lube cheat sheet

Picking a lube shouldn’t need a chemistry degree. There are really only three families, and each one has a job it’s best at.

Water-based

Best for: everyday use, condoms, every kind of toy, easy cleanup.

Water-based lubes feel the most like your body’s own moisture. They’re safe with latex and polyisoprene condoms and with toys of every material, including silicone. They wash off with water and don’t stain sheets.

The trade-off is that water-based formulas can absorb or evaporate faster, so you may need to reapply. That’s normal, not a flaw. Keep the bottle close.

Watch for: glycerin and parabens. Glycerin is a sugar alcohol that makes some lubes feel tacky, and some people find it irritating. (Drip is water-based and made without either.)

Silicone-based

Best for: long sessions, shower and bath play, anal.

Silicone lube is super slick and lasts a long time because it doesn’t absorb into skin. It’s safe with latex condoms.

Watch for: silicone toys. Silicone lube can react with some silicone toys and leave the surface gummy. Patch-test on the base first, or stick to water-based with silicone toys. It also takes soap to wash off and can stain fabric.

Oil-based

Best for: massage, solo play, external use.

Oils feel rich and last forever. But oil breaks down latex, so never use oil-based lube with latex condoms. Some people also find oils harder to wash away internally.
